UF membrane replacement

When to replace tubular UF membranes: cleaning or replacement

Plan tubular UF membrane replacement using recovery after cleaning, permeate quality and the useful production required from the existing plant.

Use age for budgeting and performance for the decision

For an industrial plant, the end of useful service has a practical consequence: the required capacity or reliability is no longer available. Record commissioning date and operating hours, but avoid turning a number of years into an automatic purchase instruction. Modules of the same age may have experienced very different feeds and cleaning histories.

Berghof describes condition assessment and planned replacement, including operating improvements that may precede renewal. To prepare that decision, separate three outcomes: recovered capacity, required retention and operating cost. A module that remains functional may still justify planned renewal if it consumes the plant's standby capacity or causes production interruptions. Make the consequence visible in the investment case.

What cleaning demonstrates and what still needs checking

Berghof's manual uses comparison with a reference clean-water flow to assess cleaning. CUT describes the end of service for its T-CUT family when cleaning no longer restores flow and separation characteristics. These are manufacturer-specific references; confirm the applicable criterion in the documentation for the installed module.

Prepare a before-and-after comparison under equivalent conditions using the approved procedure. Add net water production over representative operating days. If initial records are missing, identify that limitation and use the best available references without presenting an estimate as a commissioning measurement. Successful cleaning alone does not demonstrate that the complete plant can meet its contractual production requirement under the current feed conditions.

Compare continued cleaning with replacement

Compare alternatives over the same period and useful water volume. Include membranes, installation, cleaning products, energy, labour, waste management and lost production. State the shutdown cost explicitly: a lower module price can produce a more expensive project if every train must be taken offline together. Record the assumptions so that purchasing and operations compare the same scope.

Agree purchase triggers with the operating team: minimum production, acceptable quality, maximum intervention frequency and reserve capacity. These limits belong to the project; no universal percentage of flux loss requires every tubular UF installation to be replaced. When the problem is concentrated in one train, assess phased renewal and define how its outcome will be verified.

Turn the decision into a replacement enquiry

Send Neptuno module identification, unit count, operating history before and after cleaning, feed analysis and the available shutdown window. Explain whether the objective is to restore the existing arrangement or investigate a modification. The assessment can then connect supply, integration and acceptance criteria.

A compatible tubular replacement requires verification of the specific model. UltraFlux™ uses outside-in filtration; considering it for an existing tubular plant means assessing a possible retrofit and defining the necessary adaptations. A direct exchange between the two configurations must not be assumed.
