Nanobubbles in DAF: how to test coagulant and polymer dose

Controlled comparison of separation, chemicals, sludge and energy when adding nanobubbles before a DAF.

Published Updated

Keep the baseline comparable

DAF performance depends on coagulation, flocculation, pressure, recycle, air-to-solids ratio and hydraulic loading. Changing several variables together prevents attribution of improvement to new gas generation. The application page explains connection points; this article focuses on proving a difference.

Sample feed and outlet over comparable periods. Record flow, TSS, turbidity, COD, pH, temperature, chemical products, pressure, recycle and sludge removal. For fluctuating feed, compare matching operating blocks or paired periods.

  • Set minimum outlet quality and acceptable variation in advance.
  • Record commercial product concentration and active fraction of coagulant/polymer.
  • Document operator actions and changes in plant load.

Reduce dose in stages

First establish current DAF performance. Then add nanobubbles without immediately changing all chemical settings. Once stable, reduce coagulant or polymer stepwise and verify that TSS, turbidity and stability remain acceptable. Product litres mislead if commercial concentration changes; use kg active ingredient per m³ treated.

Also measure sludge volume and dry-solids content. Lower dose could reduce chemical sludge, but worse separation can raise downstream cost. Include pump electricity and gas supply in the balance.

Report the result with its scope

A valid result states period, water, dose, quality and operating conditions. If improvement only occurs for one feed or pH, that limit belongs in the conclusion. Do not extrapolate a percentage to other DAF plants without trials.

Where possible, alternate baseline and trial periods rather than running all baseline tests first. This reduces bias from changes in feed or operator practice. Preserve the raw dose and quality records even if the result is neutral; a neutral trial can prevent an uneconomic retrofit.

Common questions

Do nanobubbles replace DAF saturation?

Do not assume so. Assess the role of existing saturation and change it only with a specific design and trial.
