Reverse osmosis and reuse

Dairy wastewater reuse: how to combine UF, NF and RO

Separate product recovery from effluent treatment and choose membrane stages by fats, proteins, salts and final water use.

Do not conflate commercial whey with effluent

Whey intended for ingredients is designed around retaining proteins, lactose or other valuable components. Wash, purge or process wastewater is assessed for variability, organic load, cleaning chemicals and reclaimed-water use. Sharing a technology name does not mean the two streams share materials, operation or acceptance criteria.

Sample separate streams before mixing: a concentrated product batch can dominate a daily-average COD. Identify acid/alkaline CIP, disinfectants and temperature changes.

  • Flow by source and time; protein, fat, lactose, TSS and total/soluble COD.
  • Salts, conductivity, pH, temperature and CIP products.
  • Permeate use, required quality and concentrate management.

Give each stage a job

MF/UF can be assessed for clarification or fractionation of particles and macromolecules. NF may select certain solutes while allowing some ions to pass. RO applies when broader dissolved-component separation or compatible water removal is needed; reject carries the concentrated constituents.

Selection depends on the real stream. Lactose or salt rejection by a particular NF membrane cannot be inferred from MWCO alone; it must be tested.

Close the reuse case

Before promising process water, compare permeate analysis with the specific use and applicable hygiene and safety requirements. Calculate cleaning, energy, availability and concentrate disposal. For variable streams, a pilot should cover both production and plant cleaning conditions.

Keep a separate balance for each source stream before mixing. Segregating a product-rich stream or CIP discharge may be more valuable than adding membrane stages to a combined effluent. For reclaimed water, sampling must represent the plant's real cleaning and production cycle.

Common questions

Must NF always sit between UF and RO?

No. NF is worthwhile only when its selectivity addresses a measured target; it may be unnecessary or unsuitable.
