High-solids ultrafiltration

When does UF reduce the duty before wastewater evaporation?

Mass-balance criteria for solids preconcentration before evaporation, without a universal thermal-savings claim.

Published Updated

First define what must be evaporated

In digestate and high-load wastewater, UF can produce permeate and a concentrate of retainable solids. If the product or waste to evaporate is the concentrate, thermal flow may fall. If the target is salts or soluble COD that pass to permeate, the simplification fails: that stream also needs treatment or concentration.

The balance must follow each critical component and the lawful, practical destination of both streams. Evaporator inlet flow alone is not net savings.

  • Measure TSS, total and dissolved solids, total and soluble COD, ammonium and conductivity.
  • Set required concentrate composition and permeate quality.
  • Compare current evaporation with UF, pumping, cleaning and permeate treatment added.

An example that bounds the opportunity

With 10 m³/h at 20 kg/m³ fully retainable solids, theoretical concentration to 40 kg/m³ gives 5 m³/h concentrate and 5 m³/h permeate. If only concentrate is evaporated, half the original volume reaches the evaporator. That does not establish a 50% steam saving: final evaporation target, composition, heat recovery and permeate destination all matter.

Increasing viscosity may limit concentration, flux and pumping before the theoretical target.

QuestionData needed
What is retained?Component concentration in all three streams
How far can it concentrate?Viscosity, net flux and cleaning in a pilot
What happens to permeate?Quality, use or downstream treatment
Is net energy saved?Steam, electricity and recovered-heat balance

Acceptance test

Test representative feed to the intended concentration and measure stable flux, recirculation energy, cleaning and outlet composition. Compare the entire treatment train, including permeate management. Only then can project benefit be quantified.

Use a sensitivity range rather than one optimistic case: vary achievable retentate concentration, net UF flux and the fraction of permeate that needs further treatment. This makes clear whether the economics survive realistic uncertainty or depend on a perfect split that the trial cannot deliver.

Common questions

Does UF remove ammonium from digestate?

UF is not designed as a barrier to dissolved ammonium; measure its distribution and specify a downstream stage if needed.
